Traditional Acupuncture & Cupping
Why Acupuncture and Cupping?
Acupuncture balances the body’s internal systems, while cupping works on the external to ease tension and increase blood flow. Together, they address both the root cause and physical manifestations of imbalance.
Acupuncture Benefits
Traditional acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles placed at specific points along the body’s fascial meridians.
Modern research supports acupuncture’s ability to influence the nervous system, release natural endorphins, and support healing for a wide range of conditions: from stress, headaches and allergies to musculoskeletal pain, digestion and promoting overall well-being.
-
Fatigue, difficulty focusing, brain fog, burnout, air hunger, listlessness
Insomnia - falling asleep/staying asleep, vivid dreams, sweating at night, sudden wakefulness, exhaustion despite getting “enough sleep”
-
Nausea, bowel movement irregularities, food sensitivities, blood sugar issues, acid reflux, IBS, GERD, bloating
Histamine intolerance, autoimmune conditions, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia
-
Get support with smoking cessation, medication tapering, transitioning through major life changes, etc.
-
Emotional stress like anxiety, depression, frustration and grief can disrupt our physical body’s functions like our digestion, immune response, sleep hygiene, and more.
Cupping Therapy Benefits
Cupping is a therapy that uses cups to draw circulation to specific areas of the body. This technique helps release muscle tension, encourage blood flow, and rehydrate the tissue networks that can contribute to pain or fatigue.
-
Cupping can play a role in finally uprooting your chronic aches and pains, particularly in your back!
-
Many aches and pains stem from dehydrated tissues which lose their elasticity and plasticity.
-
Cupping can help release tension lines of muscular or fascial networks across the body.
-
With improved blood flow, we get more resources for tissue repair moving in and more byproducts from tissue breakdown moving out. This means better recovery quality.
What to Expect
Each session begins with a consultation to understand your goals and health history. We’ll use pulse diagnosis to confirm and customize your treatment. You’ll get to rest with the needles, and then follow up with cupping where appropriate. At the end of the session, we’ll review any specific homework that would support your treatment.
How to Prepare for an Appointment
Wear clothes that are easy to move
We may need access to arms and legs as well as the abdomen and back.
Plan a little down time after your first session
People respond to acupuncture differently. Some people can feel disoriented and need a moment before they return to the NYC chaos.
Eat and be well hydrated
The procedures can be relaxing but they are still stressors on the body. Be sure to fuel yourself before our sessions to prevent fainting.
Avoid caffeine if you are needle sensitive
Caffeine can increase your needle sensitivity and discomfort during our sessions.
Expect to be sore afterwards
You may feel sore in the areas we worked when you leave and it may continue for up to 72hrs.
Avoid alcohol 24hrs before and after your session for best results
Processing alcohol slows your body’s response to treatments.
Post Session Care
Plan for a good night’s sleep
Your body repairs itself as you sleep so make sure you support your healing with a a good night’s sleep.
Be mindful at the gym
You may be feeling really good! Try not to do anything outside your usual routine or over exert yourself in the first 48hrs. Your body is still recovering even if it doesn’t feel like it.
Avoid cold immersions
Cold therapies can slow your micro-circulation for hours after the fact and slow the healing process.
Your cupping marks will fade!
The cupping marks can have some staying power the first time you get it done. These tend to fade within hours or up to a week. As you get cupping regularly done, the micro-circulation improves and those marks will fade away faster or not form at all.
You may have a flare up or new symptoms
Treatments can “jumpstart” the immune response and trigger a flare up of current symptoms before they start to improve or trigger new symptoms to appear while the familiar ones fade. This is quite normal! Feel free to reach out to marisa@themovewellclinic.com if you have concerns or questions about your experience.
